Sea Buckthorn for Joint Support and Arthritis Relief

Do you suffer from painful joints? That old knee injury acting up again? Joint pain can be caused by many types of injuries or conditions. No matter what causes it, joint pain can be very bothersome.  Sea buckthorn can help provide relief to achy joints and may prevent cartilage degeneration and inflammation.

Common Culprit: Arthritis

Arthritis involves the breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage normally protects a joint, allowing it to move smoothly. Cartilage also absorbs shock when pressure is placed on the joint, such as when you walk. Without the normal amount of cartilage, the bones rub together, causing pain, swelling (inflammation), and stiffness.  Joint inflammation may result from:

  • An autoimmune disease (the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue)
  • Broken bone
  • General “wear and tear” on joints
  • Infection, usually by bacteria or virus

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes stiffness and pain in the joints. Osteoarthritis involves growth of bone spurs and degeneration of cartilage at a joint. It is very common in adults older than 45 and can cause joint pain.

Usually the joint inflammation goes away after the cause goes away or is treated. Sometimes it does not. When this happens, you have chronic arthritis. Arthritis may occur in men or women. Osteoarthritis is the most common type.

SBT Rescue:  An Anti-Inflammatory Agent

Sea Buckthorn may be a possible treatment for arthritis according to a 2005 study published by International Immunopharmacology.   Scientists found a significant reduction in induced inflammation in animals that were given SBT leaf extract as compared to the untreated animals in a dose dependent manner.  Additionally, these results were reported in after only 5 days!

SBT Weapon of choice: Essential Omega 3 Fatty Acids!

Sea Buckthorn may be a powerful anti-oxidant is due to its quantity of essential Omega-3 fatty acids.  Omega-3’s can be converted into natural anti-inflammatory substances called prostaglandins and leukotrienes. These 2 compounds help decrease inflammation and pain. In numerous studies over the years, participants with inflammatory diseases have reported less joint stiffness, swelling, tenderness, and overall fatigue when taking omega-3 oils. And in 1998, an exciting review of well-designed, randomized clinical trials reported that essential omega-3 fatty acids were more successful than a placebo in improving the condition of people with rheumatoid arthritis. The research also showed that getting more omega-3 EFA’s enabled some participants to reduce their use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Relief from Pain

As an anti-oxidant, Sea Buckthorn could be able to neutralize free radicals, chemicals that can travel through the body and cause great amounts of damage to healthy cells, and cell membranes. This is important in many diseases, such as arthritis, where free radicals are responsible for the painful joint inflammation and eventual damage to the joints. Sea Buckthorn’s combination of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects could explain why many people with joint disease find relief when they use it regularly.
