Sea Buckthorn: The True Healing Oil for Tissue Regeneration!

Sea Buckthorn, or hippophae rhamnoides, has been making the news lately for its remarkable health promoting properties. And while some of the scientific research may be new, the benefits of Sea Buckthorn have been well known for centuries. While the uses of Sea Buckthorn include treatments for high blood pressure, Parkinson’s disease, rheumatism, allergies, and many more, Sea Buckthorn for tissue regeneration is of particular interest because of the mounting research showing its efficacy.

Tissue regeneration is a critical concern for those recovering from severe burns, deep wounds, abrasions, as well as the effects of cancer and chemotherapy. Scientific research is showing that Sea Buckthorn berry has the chemical makeup necessary to help the body heal from injuries more effectively and quickly.

What is it that makes Sea Buckthorn useful for skin regeneration? Body tissues, whether the skin on the outside, or the tissues that make up the less visible parts of the body, are made up of dozens of building blocks. If some of those crucial building blocks are missing, then tissue either does not heal, or heals slowly and ineffectively. The body obtains many of those building blocks in the form of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, proteins, and other substances found in foods and supplements. Sea Buckthorn contains a host of these building blocks including vitamins C, A, several B vitamins, E, K, P, F, as well as omega-7, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and sodium.

Medical scientists are always seeking to find more effective means of dealing with the damaging effects of major burns. Silver sufadiazine (SSD) has been the standard in burn treatment for many years, but not without its side effects. Several studies on the efficacy of Sea Buckthorn for burn treatment have been done, including one in which researchers at the Department of Biochemical Pharmacology in Delhi, India, conducted a side by side trial of Silver and Sea Buckthorn. The comparison showed faster reduction in wound area and increased collagen synthesis in wounds treated with the Sea Buckthorn (1). Further studies confirmed the effectiveness of Sea Buckthorn for tissue regeneration, without any reported side effects (2, 3).

While the scientific reasoning behind the effectiveness of Sea Buckthorn oil and extract can be somewhat technical, other explanations are far easier. Vitamin E, long famed for its tissue regeneration properties, comprises 76% to 89% of the fruit or seeds of Sea Buckthorn, accounting for its powerful skin healing properties (4).  Read more about sea buckthorn and healing skin ailments here.

The properties of Sea Buckthorn make it a powerful, natural means for promoting wound healing, and overall skin health. As scientists take the time to explore its uses and effectiveness, more of its historical uses are sure to be confirmed. With the abundance of topical products available, many people are now turning to Sea Buckthorn for tissue regeneration.

  1. My 22 month old daughter has deep second degree burns on her arm. Two large blisters popped. I’m trying to find out whether I can apply this oil on those areas and if so whether I can apply it neat or not. I can’t find any info on how to actually use it for burns and because she is so young I want to be careful.

    • Hello,

Yes, you can apply oil to the burns undiluted. Sea buckthorn oil is soothing on burns and is known to aid with the healing of burns and prevention of scars. A little bit goes a long way so just remember that you only need a drop or so. Also be sure to properly clean the wounds with soap and water first to prevent infection. Also make sure you are using sea buckthorn fruit oil because it will be better for healing than the seed oil.

      Good luck

    • Hello,

Yes, sea buckthorn can be very helpful with the healing of wounds. We would suggest using the berry oil. It’s okay to apply it directly to the wound. In this case you should make sure you are addressing the diabetes that is causing the wound as well. If that is not being addressed, the wound will not heal, even with sea buckthorn.

      Thanks

  3. Can this be used internally? I’m looking for something to help with cell regeneration for a tooth that was broken and is currently not responsive to cold or electric stimulation. I would like to save the tooth and avoid a root canal. This is for an 8 year old child.

    • Hello,

Yes you can use it internally, just be sure that you are using a product that has a supplement facts panel on the packaging (that will ensure that it is approved by the company for internal use). We would suggest using the fruit oil for this application.

Sea buckthorn oils can be great for soft tissues and helping skin conditions, but we don’t know how much it could help a damaged tooth. It would certainly be good for the gums and definitely wouldn’t hurt the damaged tooth. We just aren’t sure if it will heal the tooth but it is worth trying. You may want to mix a dosage of SBT oil with coconut oil and do a swishing or oil pulling session.

Please follow the serving size suggestions on the product you buy. For use in children, you can give about half of the dosage that is recommended for adults but you may just want to try using it as a mouth wash/ oil pull.

      Thanks

    • Hi there,

The fruit oil in particular is great for the gums because it supports cellular health- especially on the soft tissues of the gums. You can take capsules or put the oil directly on your gums. You can even add a drop or two to mouth wash, though you may need to brush after. The fruit oil is orange so it can temporarily turn your mouth that color.

      Hope that helps!

  4. I cut my finger tip with a food processor. Adipose and soft tissue were cut. However, because the bone wasn’t exposed and it took me 20 minutes to get the cut piece out of the processor, doctors could not saw the piece of finger. Doctors said I shouldn’t apply medicine directly on the wound. So, I believe I’d be unable to use the oil now. Can this oil be taken orally maybe in the form of capsules such fish oil capsules? And if not, at what point in the healing process could I start putting the oil directly on the wound ?

    • Hi there,

Yes, you can take sea buckthorn oils orally. We suggest finding a product that contains a blend of the seed and fruit oils (check our sponsor ads for products). Some companies also have both types of oils in dropper bottles that can be taken orally or used externally. Once your wound is in the stage where a light pink scar is forming you can start applying the fruit oil (some companies call this berry oil). The fruit oil has omega-7 which will help stop the development of scars and will help the skin tissues heal. Normally, we would suggest just putting it directly in the wound, but it sounds like you have a pretty severe injury. You don’t want to risk infection, so please listen to the doctor on this one. Once the open wound has closed up it will be safe to add the oil without risk of infection.

      Thank you!

  5. About four months ago I got a skin irrritation from a cream and it made my cheeks red. I realized I have sensitive skin. After the redness subsided, It left behind a red mark from what I think are broken blood capillaries from the reaction I got. The red mark reduced but is still visible to this day. Can Sea Buckthorn help Get rid of this red mark In all?

    • Hello,

It’s possible that sea buckthorn oil could help. However, if the allergic reaction caused rosacea, it could be a bit more complicated to get rid of. Sea buckthorn oils are great for helping scars, cuts and burns to prevent or lessen the appearance of scars. Rosacea is more complicated because it’s something that is occurring under or inside of your skin. You might want to try taking an SBT supplement internally and using a straight sbt seed oil on the affected area. It might not be rosacea but it does sound like it (broken capillaries on cheeks). Rosacea can also be caused by food allergies, autoimmune diseases and other culprits. So you may also want to look into other things that may have caused the outbreak for additional support.

      Thanks

  6. I have a burn scar/mark on my forehead which is 20 days old. Will Sea Buck Thorn Oil help in removing the scar/mark. If so, how long would it take. Thanks.

    • Hello,
We can’t say for sure how long it would take, that all depends on your skin and many other factors. But yes, the berry oil would be your best bet. Just do a daily treatment where you rub the oil directly into the scar. It will help to massage the area of the scar because it will help break down scar tissue. You can let the oil soak in for about 30 minutes and then wash or wipe off the excesses oil that has not absorbed.

  7. I put hyluronic acid on my face for a peeling. It has left my face with some burnt marks (dark/red spots). Can sea buck thorn oil help? If so, berry, fruit or just seed oil? Thank in advance for the prompt reply.

    • Hi,

Both oils are good for skin. The seed oil might be better because it’s very high in Vitamin E making it good for brightening.

      Thanks
